A starter or riser molding is mounted to the cabinet top in order to simulate an extension of the cabinet box, allowing the crown molding to be installed higher. This will give you a perfect line.

Our kitchen ceiling is 10’ at the highest point (inside the tray). This gives a varied height above the counter, which looks good and gives additional height for different appliances on the counter which clients find useful when their coffee pot etc. You will need to do a 2 piece molding application:

You’ll see in the picture here that the dip is centered on the molding. Another key point is the outside temperature and humidity is much different in south carolina during the year. If the ceiling above the cabinets is not flat and level, crown moulding will touch the ceiling at one point and have significant gaps at others.
It is usually about 1.5 tall. Continue with this technique around the rest of the kitchen, cutting inside and outside miters at the normal miter angle, and “rolling” the crown up or down so that it meets the vertical height needed to maintain the proper reveal. Some are less straight then others.
You can also raise the 30 unit to the same height as the 42 unit against the ceiling. Do the same on the wall below. This is a common problem in old houses when you install the cabinets to the ceiling.

This little 1/4 strip should be sprayed black. This piece is attached to the top of the cabinets. We didn’t want our cabinets to go clear up to 9’, so our custom cabinet maker added a soffit that matched the cabinets.
This will give you a perfect line. It all is one continuous piece from the cabinets up to the crown molding. The ceiling height varies by about 1 3/4 inches from one end of the kitchen to the other end (something i should have thought about sooner).
Measure and mark the front section of crown molding to the cabinet width. It works, but doesn’t really look good. Next the crown molding is attached to the carrier piece.

It can be prevented by nailing the ceiling molding to the ceiling allowing it to float up and down on the wall. There are 2 ways to do this without plastering. Install the cut pieces as well, using wood glue to help hold the joints together, until you reach the uneven area.
The first piece needed is the carrier molding. Hold the pencil at this angle and draw the line from end to end on the molding. Uneven ceilings can create issues in kitchens when it comes to crown or other mouldings that finish out the tops of cabinets.
